Step One: Create a MapLayer List: The Layer List contains a list of the map layers that are available for viewing. Choose the layer you want to use to create your map from this list. The map layers are organized in folders and subfolders based on content. For example, vegetation and wetland map layers are stored in the Vegetation and Wetland subfolders in the Biological Resources folder.
- Visible Check Box:
The Visible Check Box is for making layers in the list visible or not visible in the map. When the box is checked, the layer is visible and when the box is unchecked, it is not visible. Certain layers are automatically visible when the application opens for the first time. Certain layers will become visible when the map is zoomed in to a larger scale.- Active Radio Button:
The Active Radio Button is for making layers in the list active in the map. When a layer is active, selections, queries, and other functions may be performed on that layer.Changes to the Visible Check Boxes and Active Radio Buttons will automatically be executed when the "Auto Refresh" option is turned on in the Layer List. If you prefer to refresh the map yourself, turn off "Auto Refresh" and press the
button to activate your changes to the Visible Check Boxes and Active Radio Buttons. The map will "Retrieve Map" and display your new map.
Step Two: Modifying, Viewing, Querying a Map
The Toolbox Bar: The toolbox contains all the tools needed to navigate around the map, along with special functions described below. Placing your mouse over a toolbox symbol will provide text information explaining what the tool function is. The active tool will display a red square around it.

The Layer List displays all available map layers and allows the user to select what layers are to be displayed (VISIBLE) and select the ACTIVE layer.
The Legend displays visible map layers and symbols.
Overview Map Tool: The function toggles the small location map located in the upper left corner of the main map on and off. The purpose of the overview map tool is to give you a reference as to your location when zoomed into the main map.
Zoom In Tool: This function allows you to zoom in closer to areas on the map. To use the zoom in tool, click the zoom in button, and use your mouse to draw a "box" around the area you want to zoom to. Simply place the cursor at one corner of the area, click and hold the left mouse button, and drag the cursor to the other corner of your area and release.
Zoom Out Tool: This function allows you to zoom out to view a larger map area. To use the zoom out tool, use your mouse to draw a "box" just like you would to zoom in. The smaller the box, the more you zoom out.
Zoom To Full Extent Tool: This function will zoom back to the original and complete extent of the map.
Zoom To Active Layer Tool: This function will zoom to the extent of the active layer.
Zoom To Last Extent Tool: This function will zoom back to the last extent of the map.
Pan Hand Tool: Using the pan hand, you may pan the map north, south, east, and west.
Information Tool: The identify function allows you to view tabular data about all visible layers on the map. Simply position your cursor on top of the feature you are interested in, and click with the left mouse button.
Query Tool: This function allows you to select specific sections of a map by using simple to complex string queries. See Query Help for more details.
Measure Distance Tool: This function allows you to measure distances on the map. Once you click the "measure" button, a pair of boxes will be added to your map view. These boxes will show the segment and running total lengths. Simply click on your starting point, allow the map to redraw, and click the ending point to get the distance.
Set Units Tool: This button will change the display unit of measurement on the map. Changing the display units will also change the measuring units. To change the units of measurement, press this button. In the Text Frame, a list box will appear with the Map Units, this value cannot be changed. Another list box will appear with a choice of display units. Select the desired display units and press set units. The map will be redrawn with the scale bar showing the selected unit of measurement. All measuresments made with the Measure button will also be shown in the selected units.
Buffer Tool: This function will create a buffer around the selected features and select new features touching the buffer of a selected layer. Features must first be selected with the "Select by Rectangle". To create a buffer, press the buffer tool. In the Text Frame, a list box will appear with a list of all of the layers to select from. Choose the layer you want the buffer to select features from. An input box appears after the list box for entering the distance of the buffer. Enter the distance of the desired buffer. A check box also appears to Display Attributes. Check this box if you want the attributes of the selected layer to display. Once you have selected a layer and entered a distance, press the Create Buffer Button.
Select Rectangle: This function selects features from the active layer by a box drawn on the map. To select features by a rectangle, first make the layer you wish to select from active in the Layer List.
Clear Tool: The clear tool will clear any selected features or measure lines from the map.
Print Tool: The print map function formats a map for your printer. When you click the print map button, you will be shown a form where you can add a map title. Then, a new window will appear with your map, location map, legend, and title. You can use this feature to save your map as a jpeg to your computer or use the PRINT button to print the page. Another option is to use any screen capture software to capture the map image, legend or window.
